The latest UNICEF report, The State of the World’s Children 2009, states that over 500,000 mothers die during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. That’s over 500,000 children (provided they survive) becoming orphans from the time they are born. A great majority of these maternal mortalities are preventable by basic OB/GYN care. With modern medicine as it is, this just should not be.
